There are some words about host name like “FQDN”, “IP address”, “domain name”, etc.
What are the differences between them?
What’s the difference between “host name” and “domain name”
Firstly we sometimes confuse “host name” and “domain name”.
For example, when the URL is “http://www.AAAA.com”, host name is “www” and domain name is “AAAA.com”.
In addition, host name and domain name in total is called FQDN which is “www.AAAA.com” in this case.
Do we need put “www” before domain name? It is not always necessary, for example the IP address of this blog doesn’t have “www”.
When you send ping with FQDN instead of IP address, the ping can work.
How to decide the host name?
In the case of Windows, you can decide the host name by writing host name on the “Hosts”. The procedure to decide the host name is as follows.
1: Search the hosts file on “C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC”
2: Write the IP address and host name(e.g. 1111.1111.1111.1111 PC1) on the last line.
If you use Linux, you can find hosts file at “/etc/hosts”.
